How is centrifugal elutriation useful in answering biological questions?

Published work demonstrates the utility of centrifugal elutriation for synchronizing cells and purifying certain cell populations from a heterogeneous starting population. Elutriation can also been proven useful as a preprocessing cleanup application to remove small debris present in several cell preparations prior to cell sorting. This preprocessing step, for cells with large amounts of small debris or other unwanted material, can generate a cleaner sample and improve downstream cell sorter efficiency.
