ALP: Automated Labware Positioner--acronym typically connected with Biomek products.

BioRAPTR: Bio RAPid Transfer Robot. BC family of non-contact dispensers for low-volume dispensing operations and are completely robotic.

BioSafe: BioSAFE Engineering is a global leader in the design, manufacture, installation and service of equipment used in healthcare, industry and science to eliminate the threat of hazardous or infectious agents. In the cases of our centrifuges, BioSafe machinery include a BioSafe HEPA (High-efficiency particulate arrestance) filter.

CAN: Controller Area Network. Having to do with wireless or remote control software connection.

CCC (Plug): Countercurrent chromatography

CFM: (airflow monitor spec) cubic feet per minute. 1 CFM=28.3 LPM; 0.1 CFM= 2.83 LPM

CGMP: CGMP compatible (for centrifuges) means current good manufacturing practice

DMSO: dimethyl sulfoxide: a liquid substance, C 2 H 6 OS, used in industry as a solvent and paint and varnish remover. Our tape sealers are DMSO compatible, meaning they clean up safely with the use of this cleaner.

EDTA: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

Elutriation (centrifuge setting): sorts and identifies individual particles by size.

enhanced Forward Scatter (eFSC) technology.

FFPE: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded

FSE: Field Service Engineer A Beckman Coulter instructor sent on-site for train customers on new equipment usage.

gDNA: genomic DNA

HDR: In automation: High Density Replicator. ”The High-Density Replication (HDR) tool allows the high throughput transfer of sub-microliter volumes in a precise and efficient manner.”

HEPA: High-efficiency particulate arrestance. HEPA filter kits distinguish certain centrifuge machines as BioSafe. (see BioSafe)

IVD: In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD Compliant). Reagents, instruments and systems intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, including a determination of the state of health, in order to cure, mitigate, treat or prevent diseases. Such products are intended for use in the collection, preparation and examination of specimens taken from the human body. These products can be used for clinical diagnosis. These products are labeled “For In Vitro Diagnostic Use.”

IVT: In Vitro Transcription

LLS: Liquid Level Sensing A patented feature of Beckman Coulter pipette tips for enhanced accuracy during automated deep well sampling.

LPM or L/perM: (air flow stat) litres per minute. 1 CFM=28.3 LPM; 0.1 CFM=2.83 LPM

MP: stands for Multichannel Pod. A feature of automation devices, such as Biomek MP.

NPT: National Pipe Thread Refers to “nuts and bolts” hardware repair items.Usually has a designation of fractional inches to identify the width of the part, ie., Quick Connect Body Fitting ⅜ inch NPT

NVT: Near Vertical Tube, a centrifuge rotor feature.

PAXgene preserved blood: A “whole blood” sample.

PlateStak: Automated microplate handler.

PCR: Polymerase Chain Reaction is a simple and inexpensive tool used to focus in on a segment of DNA and copy it billions of times over. PCR is used every day to diagnose diseases, identify bacteria and viruses, match criminals to crime scenes, and in many other ways. PCR testing is a functionality of the Biomek instruments.

Preparative (Ultracentrifuge): An ultracentrifuge that includes a large set of mixing rotors, tubes and containers to allow for an array of processes. (see ultracentrifuge)

RCF: Relative centrifugal force, usually written as [number] x g with g meaning gravity.

SAMI Sagian software acronym. Sagian Automated Method Interface

Span-8:Refers to an automated arm with eight tips that “spread” over a rack of up to eight test tubes or beakers at once, inserting the same sample or liquid simultaneously with a single motion. Used for greater speed and accuracy on high throughput redundant testing on setups such as 96- or 384-sample racks.

SNP: A method of genotyping. The measurement of the genetic variations of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms.

SPE: Solid Phase Extraction. Pertains to automation products.

SPRI: Solid Phase Reversible Immobilization

SR Drive: Switched Reluctance Drive exclusive to BC centrifuges which shortens accel/decel times compared to competitor’s model.

Three-phase (centrifuge setting): machine further filters sluice down into component solids, liquids and gasses.

Ultracentrifuge: separates high-molecular-weight compounds, viruses and subcellular particles for study.

UNSPSC: United Nations Standard Products and Services Classification
